Police Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if I am in an automobile accident?
Remain at the scene of the accident and do not move the vehicle. If the accident is property damage only, contact law enforcement by calling
599-8345 or 597-0500. If it is an emergency situation (i.e., someone is injured) call 911.

How do I get a copy of a police report or an accident report?
You may pick up a copy of your police report or accident report by coming to the Police Department between Monday and Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm and requesting it.  There is no charge to obtain a copy of the report.
Can I make a police report over the telephone or does a police officer have to come to my house?
Yes. In some situations, it may prove to be more beneficial for you, as well as law enforcement, to make a report over the phone to save time.
How do I get a concealed weapons permit?
The Person County Sheriff's Department handles all weapons permits for Roxboro and Person County.
I do not have any transportation and have to get somewhere. Can a police officer give me a ride?
No. Due to liability issues, we cannot provide rides to individuals other than those we pick up as arrestees or for questioning.

How should I report suspicious activity in the neighborhood?
You can report any suspicious activity or crimes by calling the department at 599-8345 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 330-0923.

I have a warrant on me. How do I get it cleared up?
You should come to the Police Department during normal working hours and we will have the officer holding the warrant come in to take care of it. If you come up after normal hours, you will need to go to the Law Enforcement Center (jail building) and they will have the officer meet you there.

You arrested someone. What is his or her bond? Where are they?
You can find out about the bond and the location of the person arrested by calling the Magistrate's Office at 597-0551.

How do I take out a warrant on someone? How long do I have to take out a warrant?
Go to the Magistrate's office and speak with the magistrate on duty. You will be sworn in and given the opportunity to give your testimony. The magistrate will then determine whether or not to issue a warrant. On misdemeanor offenses, you have up to two years from the date of the occurrence. On felony charges, you have up to seven years for a warrant to be issued, but felony charges have to be investigated by a law enforcement officer before a warrant may be issued.

Why did an officer tell me to take out a warrant on someone instead of just arresting him right there?
There are only certain misdemeanor offenses that an officer can arrest for that occur outside of his or her presence. Unless it is one of those offenses, you will be required to obtain a warrant before the officer can make an arrest.

We have a problem with speeders in our neighborhood. What can we do about it?
In response to numerous citizen complaints and concerns, the Roxboro City Council has approved a new policy designed to help slow people down on our neighborhood streets. The traffic calming policy lays out a process for implementing traffic calming measures. Contact the Police Department and ask to speak with the District Commander for that area and explain your concerns in regard to speeding.

How can I get a restraining order?
In Domestic Violence cases it is common for the victim to request that a restraining order be issued. A Domestic Violence Protective Order can be issued in these cases by going to the Clerk of Court's office and filling out the proper paperwork. Also, the magistrate can issue an Ex-Partner Domestic Violence Protective Order in emergency situations, such as weekends or holidays.

Should I install a burglar alarm on my home?
Yes. As you know, burglar alarms serve as a deterrent to criminals, especially if your alarm is audible. It also notifies law enforcement in the event that you are not at home and someone tries to break in.

What are the rules for having an alarm in Roxboro?
If you have an alarm installed in your home or business within the city limits, you are required to obtain a permit for each alarm system that such owner operates within the city from City Hall. You would also want to register the alarm system with the communications center, located at the Law Enforcement Center, for the purpose of providing adequate information in case law enforcement is dispatched to your residence on an alarm call.

Why did it take so long for the police to come when I called them last night?
Police officers are dispatched on a call prioritization method. Some situations require a more rapid response than others. If the call is an emergency situation, the officer will respond as quickly as possible. If the call is not an emergency, the officer will be dispatched according to priority.

What can I do about stray dogs/cats and about barking dogs?

Outside these circumstances, the Sheriff's Department may unlock vehicles without electric locks. However, if you have a vehicle that does have electric locks, you will be required to make other arrangements such as contacting a towing service/locksmith.
